Why Does My Car's Air Con Smell Musty (And How to Fix It)

If the first thing that hits you when you switch on the air con is a damp, sour smell, you’re not imagining it — and you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common complaints we hear in the workshop, especially as cars get a bit of age on them.

What’s actually causing the smell

Your air con system pulls in outside air, cools it by passing it over the evaporator, then blows it into the cabin. That evaporator is constantly damp with condensation, which — combined with the dust and pollen the cabin filter doesn’t quite catch — makes it a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mould.

Every time you switch the air con off, that damp evaporator sits there in the dark, and the smell builds until the next time you turn the system on and get a blast of it.

Why air fresheners don’t fix it

Hanging an air freshener off the mirror masks the smell for a while, but it doesn’t touch the actual bacteria and mould growing inside the evaporator and ductwork. As soon as the air freshener fades, the musty smell is right back.

How we actually fix it

Ozone sanitisation treats the whole cabin and system with ozone gas, which kills bacteria, mould and the odours they cause at the source — not just covers them up. Most cars come out smelling genuinely clean rather than “air freshener clean”.

We usually pair it with a fresh pollen filter if the old one’s had a while in there, since a clogged, damp filter is often part of the problem too.

When to get it sorted

If you’ve noticed the smell creeping in over the last few months, it’s worth booking in sooner rather than later — it doesn’t fix itself, and it tends to get more noticeable as the weather warms up and the air con gets used more.
