Preparing Your Car's Air Con for a Long Road Trip

Whether it’s a ferry trip across to the continent or just a long run down the country, a long drive is exactly the wrong time to discover your air con isn’t up to it. A few checks beforehand take minutes and save a lot of hassle.

Test it properly, not just for a second

Don’t just tap the button and check air comes out — run it for five or ten minutes and pay attention to whether it actually gets and stays cold, or starts warm, cools briefly, then fades. A system running low on gas often performs worst under sustained use, which is exactly what a long drive demands.

Listen for anything unusual

Check the smell, not just the temperature

A musty smell that’s tolerable for a ten-minute commute becomes a genuinely unpleasant few hours on a long trip. If it’s noticeable now, it won’t improve on its own — an ozone sanitisation treatment beforehand is a worthwhile pre-trip job.

If you’re heading somewhere hot

Air con works harder in genuinely high temperatures, and a system that’s just about coping at home can struggle more in 30°C-plus heat abroad. If it’s been two to three years since your last regas, it’s worth getting it checked before rather than finding out the hard way.

Don’t discount the air con just because you’re not chasing cold air — it’s still doing the work of clearing a fogged windscreen fast in cold, damp conditions, which matters more on unfamiliar roads. The five-minute pre-trip check

Run it for ten minutes, listen for noise, note the smell, and check it holds a cold temperature rather than fading. If anything feels off, book it in with enough notice before you travel — a same-day fix is easy at home, much harder from the side of a motorway two countries away.
