How Often Should You Regas Your Car's Air Conditioning?

It’s one of the most common questions we get asked, and the honest answer is “it depends” — but there’s a sensible rule of thumb, and a few signs that mean it’s worth doing sooner.
The general rule: every two to three years
A car’s air conditioning system loses roughly 10% of its refrigerant gas every year through completely normal use — permeation through hoses and seals, not a fault. On that basis, most cars will benefit from a regas every two to three years to keep performance where it should be.
What changes the timeline
A few things can shorten that window:
- High mileage or older seals — hoses and O-rings harden with age, letting gas escape faster.
- A genuine leak — if a regas doesn’t last anywhere near two years, there’s almost always a leak somewhere, and it’s worth getting leak detection done rather than just topping up again.
- Heavy use — vans and fleet vehicles that run the air con constantly for work will typically need it more often than a car used for the odd commute.
Signs it’s already due
Rather than watching a calendar, the air con itself will usually tell you: air that’s not as cold as it used to be, airflow that feels weaker than before, or a longer wait for the cabin to cool down are all signs it’s time, regardless of exactly how long it’s been.
Getting it done
A standard regas takes around 45 to 60 minutes and includes a vacuum and pressure test before recharging, so you leave knowing the system holds rather than hoping it does. Have a look at our regas and recharge service for the full details, or book in if it’s time.
