Electric & Hybrid Car Air Con: What's Different

More EVs and hybrids come through the workshop every year, and the questions are usually the same: is the air con actually different, and does it need anything special? Mostly yes, and a little.

The compressor runs on electricity, not a belt

On a petrol or diesel car, the air con compressor is driven by a belt connected to the engine. On an EV (and often on hybrids), it’s an electric compressor powered directly from the high-voltage battery, with its own dedicated motor. That means the air con can run even with the engine off (or with no engine at all), which is exactly why it feels like it kicks in instantly on an EV — there’s no engine to spin up first.

It has a real effect on range

Because the compressor draws straight from the battery rather than “free” engine power, air con use has a more noticeable effect on an EV’s range than it does on a petrol car’s fuel economy — sometimes a meaningful percentage on a cold or hot day with the climate control working hard. It’s one of the reasons pre-conditioning the cabin while still plugged in and charging (rather than after unplugging) has become a common habit for EV drivers — you get a comfortable cabin without spending range on it.

Servicing still matters — arguably more

A leaking or underperforming system on an EV doesn’t just mean a warmer cabin, it means the compressor and other components work harder and draw more from the battery to compensate, which chips away at range on top of comfort. The fundamentals — regas, leak detection, filter changes — are the same job either way, just with a different (and often quieter) compressor under the bonnet.

What we need to know before you book

If you’re driving an EV or hybrid, let us know when booking — high-voltage systems need the correct safety precautions and, on some models, specific tools or oils compatible with the electric compressor. It doesn’t change the price much, if at all, but it does change how we approach the job.

The bottom line

The physics of cooling the cabin is the same regardless of what’s under the bonnet — refrigerant, compression, condensation. What changes is how the compressor is powered, and how directly that link to your battery makes a healthy system worth keeping on top of.
