5 Warning Signs Your Car Air Con Needs a Regas

Air conditioning doesn’t usually fail all at once — it fades gradually as refrigerant gas is lost, which means most drivers don’t notice until the first properly warm day, when they need it most. Here’s what to keep an eye out for.

1. Air, but not cold

The fan still works fine, but what comes out is lukewarm at best. This is the classic sign that refrigerant levels have dropped too low for the system to do its job properly.

2. It takes longer to cool the cabin

If it used to take a minute or two to feel a difference and now it takes five or ten, that’s usually gradual gas loss rather than a sudden fault.

3. A musty smell on start-up

Not strictly a gas issue, but often shows up around the same time — a damp, sour smell means bacteria and mould in the system, which ozone sanitisation sorts out.

4. Weak airflow even at full blast

If the flow feels feeble no matter what setting you use, it’s often a combination of low gas and a blocked cabin filter restricting what air does get through.

5. Unusual noise when the air con kicks in

A rattle, clunk or whine specifically when the air con compressor engages can point to a tired compressor working harder than it should — worth catching before it fails completely.

Why this happens even without a fault

A car’s air conditioning loses roughly 10% of its refrigerant gas every year through completely normal use — it’s not a leak, just how the system works. That’s why even a system that’s never had a fault will eventually need a regas, typically every two to three years.
